This is our second year organising Lyrical Threads and we are making it more hands on this year round!
For those who do not already know, Lyrical Threads is a platform to facilitate the expression of our personal thoughts and feelings in a beautiful way - be in through crafts, words or our own life.
Each session of Lyrical Threads will feature a speaker who will share of their journey and experience in a particular area of craft, product or life experience. We hope that through their sharing, you too may be inspired to learn a new craft or embark on a new adventure in life.
There will also be time at Lyrical Threads to work on your own craft project and mingle with new and familiar faces.

14 July 2024 (Sun), 2 pm - 5 pm

This workshop will introduce basic hand embroidery techniques to create a mushroom embroidery sampler.

Learn how to transfer images onto fabric and try your hand at sewing outline and filling embroidery stitches. The focus of the class is to learn various stitches so you will be equipped with the knowledge to create any image in embroidery.

This traditional craft technique is a versatile medium, with contemporary applications such as in illustrations or embellishment of fabric products.

With the take-home kit (consisting of an embroidery hoop, needle, threaders, pincushion, embroidery stitch guide), participants can further explore the techniques on their own after the workshop.

Workshop is open to all experience levels including beginners.

All materials and tools will be provided during the session.

28 July 2024 (Sun), 2pm - 5pm

Dive into the art of repairing your garments and other personal fabric articles!
Drawing inspirations from age-old textile-repair traditions like boroboro in Japan or Kantha in India (or the old-school thrifty habits of our grandparents!), the movement of visible mending is growing.
In this workshop, we explore how to mend your textiles creatively with embroidery techniques. A variety of methods will be introduced to cover up holes/stains and prevent tears from getting bigger.
A beautiful mend can give new life to a piece or simply stitch a functional mend to extend the lifespan of your favourite pieces, think of that piece that keeps getting holes due to so much wear and love. Beyond mending, the techniques are also good ways to refresh tired fabric pieces.
Participants will go home with a mending sampler and can also bring their personal items for discussion on tips for mending. All materials and sewinsg tools will be provided during the session.
What you will learn:
  • Various mending methods including: patching and darning
  • Hand-embroidery stitches for creative mending: running stitch, whip stitch, blanket stitch, woven stitch

20 July 2024 (Sat), 2pm - 5pm

Sashiko is a folk art that carries a rich Japanese culture and history. It is a process of needle movement rather than a mass of stitches, and it was first developed for practical usage by the locals rather than purely aesthetic. Earning her name as “caring stitches”, sashiko soon creates a newer form of art for her beauty and inspiration.

In this workshop, participants will learn the hand sewing technique of sashiko running stitches on a coaster with geometric pattern, which will further equip the participant to attempt on bigger and more complex sashiko designs.
Participants will receive a handmade pouch that comes authentic sashkio coaster fabric, threads and needle. All materials will be provided during the session.
